As a picture of the Holy Spirit, Nehemiah comes before the king grieving over Jerusalem’s condition—a city broken, defenseless, and at the mercy of its adversaries. After making his request known, Nehemiah receives the materials needed to restore the city. In this parallel to the life of the believer, the Holy Spirt comes with a full measure of time committed to rebuilding the crumbling personality and with a full measure of heavenly support as He begins His edifying work.
